A minimum of 64 Killed in Rio's Most Extensive Law Enforcement Operation on Criminal Groups
A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid targeting the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's history.
Four security agents were among those killed during Operation Containment in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 people were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes commenced when approximately 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.
The International human rights organization stated it felt "appalled" by the police operation, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".
Mission Consequences
The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of a major criminal organizations.
State officials said at least 50 of the deceased were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Dozens of people were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Local Reaction
Locals have compared the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 people - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.
Access ways continue shut throughout the region.
Gang Growth
The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their control throughout the region, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.
Local law enforcement reported more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the mission, in addition to multiple guns.

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies comes after a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are considered members of a faction from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
