Aaron Rai Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Showdown Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a rollercoaster last day of play.
Rai nailed a decisive birdie from around eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory over the same opponent.
Final Round Drama
Rai started the last day with a one-shot advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood edged one shot ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final green.
Playoff Decider
That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where Rai triumphed to claim the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in winnings.

Notable Contenders
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of 62. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the DP World Tour, comprising eight birdies and an eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of leading the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Mansell produced an superb last round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
