Blast Claims 3 Police Officers During Property Removal Procedure in Northern Italy
A trio of officers perished and more than a dozen additional individuals were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The blast took place as officers and emergency crews approached the house near Verona to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.
All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals got detained at the scene and one more individual who fled after the explosion was located soon after. The trio have been taken to medical facility.
The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location revealed the structure turned into a pile of rubble.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.
Financial Context
The president of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the residence was under an eviction order due to financial obligations incurred by the three owners.
Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the house. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think a family member triggered the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.
A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our officers,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also discovered at the site, the interior minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
The wounded by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor believed the explosion had occurred on a level above the doorway and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.
Local Response
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed reporters, noting that the three had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Minister of Defence the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had died in the line of duty.
