Larry Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became widely known.
The economist stated in an announcement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, excited about the prospects of the company, and look forward observing their development".
The former Harvard president, who formerly led the Ivy League institution, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public emails revealed that Summers communicated with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it understood Summers' determination to resign.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he offered to the Board," the organization stated.
Political Context
This news arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on this week to endorse a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently move to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has stated he intends to endorse the measure, after modifying his stance on the matter following objections from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related correspondence released by the House Oversight Committee last week mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the billionaire's past associates, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The communications showed that the professor and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often attempting to introduce Summers to prominent world leaders.
Personal Response
After the messages were made available with the public, Summers stated he assumed "full responsibility for my poor decision to persist in interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to restore faith and repair connections with the people nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He led Harvard from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties recently on this week, he stated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the policy organization, a left-leaning think tank in Washington where the professor was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was ceased to be associated with the organization.
He joined the leadership of the AI company, which creates the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to replace its top executive OpenAI's head.
