Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.

At least 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
